Bingo’s Surprise Horse Treats

My dear friend needed a horse treat that would be malleable enough to hide medication within them. Since there are currently no Pill Pockets for horses, the only option is to buy some of the pill hiders for horses on the market or make your own. Seriously, why hasn’t the company made horse pill pockets yet? It would be very profitable! But don’t worry, we are here to teach you how to make veterinarian approved treats for your horse, donkey or even your dog that can easily hide pills. Let’s learn how to make horse treats that will hide those medications!

This is a very easy recipe. You will only need a few ingredients and can make the horse treats recipe in the microwave! We will also give you a few substitutions along the way. Oats, molasses, peppermints and water are all the ingredients required. You will also need a blender. If you do not have peppermints, you can substitute this ingredient for white sugar and peppermint extract.

In a blender, pulse peppermints until you get a fine powder. Set aside. If you do not have oat flour, place 1 1/2 cups uncooked oats into the blender and pulse until it forms a powder. Three cups of oats makes approximately one cup of oat flour.

The reason we are using oats and not wheat flour in this recipe is because of the warning labels now placed on flour packaging. It can contain trace amounts of dangerous bacteria if used raw, that can make your beloved horse sick. Oats are safe to eat raw unless the packaging states otherwise.

The great thing about this recipe is you can make these treats for donkeys, horses, and even your dog. If your pet isn’t allergic to any of the ingredients and can have small amounts of sugar, they are suitable for any of your omnivore or herbivore pals.

  • 1 cup (125g) oat flour
  • ¼ cup (50g) crushed peppermint
  • 2 tbs (30mL) molasses

Notes

If you do not own a microwave, bring 1 1/4 cups (300mL) of water and 2 tablespoons (30mL) molasses to a boil.  Add in 2 cups of oats.  Stir and let sit 5 minutes.
Do not use sugar-free peppermints.
Substitution for crushed peppermints is 1/4 cup (50g) sugar and 1 tsp (5mL) peppermint extract.
If you do not have a blender, place peppermints in a large bag and crush with a rolling pin.
If you do not have oat flour, place 1 1/2 cups uncooked oats into a blender and pulse until it forms a powder. This will make approximately one cup of oat flour.  If you do not have the ability to make oat flour, you can add additional oats 1/2 cup at a time until you can form shapes with the dough.
Although this recipe was vet approved, please check with your veterinarian before feeding any treats, especially if your horse has any dietary restrictions.

Hi Jill, I am not sure what you mean by the recipe lacks information. Could you explain further so we can make it more clear?

The recipe is not baked in the oven at all but is microwaved as it is stated in the description, photographs and in the recipe itself.

If you do not have a microwave, you could use a stovetop and those directions are also provided in the recipe notes. I hope this helps clarify any confusion as to why there is no baking time as they are not intended to be baked in the oven.
