Chocolate Chip Cheese Ball Recipe

Chocolate chip cheese ball is a fabulous no-bake dessert. I learned to make it right out of college after attending a fund raiser at an employer’s church. The original recipe wanted a lot more fat and sugar. With a little tinkering, we were able to cut down calories without sacrificing flavor. In fact, I usually cut the sugar down to 1/2 cup and use some lemon juice to give it more of a tart, classic cheesecake appeal.

It’s also fun to adjust the ingredients once you learn to make it. Instead of chocolate chips, try bits of fruit for a twist. Or use mini chocolate chips. Perhaps some white chips and macadamia nuts on the outside? Be careful about adding more sugar as a little goes a long way. Especially when you factor in the cookies you will be dipping these in. One thing to note: if you add in too much sugar or use margarine in place of the butter, it won’t roll into a ball. If that happens, do what I used to do: serve it in a bowl and call it Chocolate Chip Cheese Dip. It will still be amazingly delicious.

The chocolate chip cheese ball is served with cookies such as graham crackers, digestive biscuits or vanilla wafers. This is a huge hit at parties and in particular, with the females. For some reason women absolutely adore this dessert whereas most men either love it or hate it. If you like cheesecakes, you’ll likely really enjoy this dessert. Bonus: it is super cheap to make. Less than $5 if you buy generic.

Ingredients

  • 1 pkg (226g) softened cream cheese
  • ¾ cup (94g) powdered sugar
  • ½ cup (113g) softened butter
  • ½ cup (113g) chocolate chips
  • ½ cup (56g) crushed nuts
  • ½ tsp (2.5mL) vanilla
  • pinch (1g) salt

Instructions

  • Cream together butter and cream cheese.
  • Add in vanilla and salt.
  • Beat in sugar, one tablespoon at a time until smooth.
  • Fold in chocolate chips.
  • Shape mixture into a rough ball and chill until firm, about 1 – 2 hours.
  • Remove from fridge, finish shaping into a round ball and cover outside in chopped nuts.
  • Chill until ready to serve, removing 1/2 hour before eating. Keep leftovers in fridge.

Notes

Margarine can be substituted for butter, but it will not be as firm and many margarines will not allow it to form into a bowl.  Best to serve in a bowl.
Soften cream cheese and butter at room temperature.  Do not microwave as this can prevent it from forming a ball.
Nuts are optional.

This was the first time I made a cheese ball. It was so easy to do. I was wondering if I can freeze this?

I doubled the recipe and if I don’t freeze the other cheese ball I will eat them both. Haha – it is delicious.

To be honest, I am not sure if this recipe can be frozen as it was an earlier recipe and I never tried to freeze it to see how it would turn out. The cheese balls were always made for an event and there were never any leftovers to take home. Next time I make one, I will freeze some and update the recipe. However, if you do attempt to freeze it, I would recommend wrapping it tightly in plastic wrap and then in aluminum foil. Then thaw overnight in the refrigerator for at least 8 hours. Do not thaw on the counter as the cream cheese should stay chilled. I hope this helps.
